The Elevator Pitch

Acts 26:24-29 GNT
As Paul defended himself in this way, Festus shouted at him, “You are mad, Paul! Your great learning is driving you mad!”  Paul answered, “I am not mad, Your Excellency! I am speaking the sober truth. King Agrippa! I can speak to you with all boldness, because you know about these things. I am sure that you have taken notice of every one of them, for this thing has not happened hidden away in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do!”  Agrippa said to Paul, “In this short time do you think you will make me a Christian?”  “Whether a short time or a long time,” Paul answered, “my prayer to God is that you and all the rest of you who are listening to me today might become what I am—except, of course, for these chains!”

The idea of the elevator pitch is one that is popular in business circles. It is the generally accepted wisdom that promoters of any ideas or products should boil their presentation down to a tight, irresistible pitch that can be made between the time one gets on an elevator and chances upon a prospect, and when they get off.

The mindset of the elevator pitcher is that of seizing the opportunity,  however slight it might seem. This is the mindset of Apostle Paul as illustrated in these verses. Who goes around trying to convert a judge to Christianity while standing trial for disturbing the peace?

Well, apparently, Apostle Paul does. King Agrippa wondered how Paul thought he could convert him in the short time that he had to make his case but Apostle Paul thought an Elevator Pitch Preach was as good as any long sermon to convert the sinner.

In the light of this account, won’t we have to take a second look at all those opportunities we thought were too tight to present the gospel message? Perhaps we, like Apostle Paul need to be as at home with giving a long treatise as with giving an Elevator Preach. I suppose that is what it means to…
