So your house help is a witch?

Sad stories about house helps in Nigeria are so pervasive that it easily warrants study as a university degree course. The weird experiences of folks I alone have heard will fill tomes.

The curious thing is, these sad tales seem to happen to folks indiscriminately: believers and unbelievers alike. From mild cases of helps who just dissappear before you return from work, to more sinister ones of those who ‘bewitch’ their employers.

For believers though, we really have to ask serious questions about the potency of our own faith, if it cannot influence those who work in our household.

As I read again in the book of Joel,  I came across a verse that is very popular in Christian circles. It is one on which we hinge our claim and access to the Holy Spirit.

Joel 2:28 GNT
“Afterward I will pour out my Spirit on everyone: your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your old people will have dreams, and your young people will see visions.

Believers love to claim this prophecy, and rightly so too. As we often do however, we hardly ever take a full view of this portion of Scripture.  While we claim the outpouring of the Spirit on ourselves and our children, we barely ever notice that this promise also extends to our house helps.

Joel 2:28-29 GNT
“Afterward I will pour out my Spirit on everyone: your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your old people will have dreams, and your young people will see visions.  At that time I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, both men and women.

Apparently, the intention is for us to take particular note of God’s intention to pour out the same Spirit on our house helps as he plans to on our children. That’s why it says, “even on servants”.

Too often however, folks are generally suspicious of people who come to them as servants. Routinely now, (in addition to medical tests) they are taken for ‘spiritual check up and deliverance’ as part of the recruitment process. While these may be legitimate, or even necessary, the problem is that in our minds, we never let them shed the toga of being prime suspects of demonic activities.

Folks ought to start realizing  that before God, their house helps are just as precious as their own children and God desires to pour his spirit upon them too.

Know what,  you should desire your house helps salvation and growth in the spirit as you do your children’s.
